AI agent instead of assistant: what autonomous systems can really do in a company

a chatbot-style assistant that only waits for instructions. An agent is sold as something that can run a workflow with less hand-holding — book, fetch, update, escalate when stuck.

In a company, that sounds like free labour. Reality is narrower and more useful if you stay honest about limits.

What autonomous systems can already do

Multi-step office chores. Pull data from one tool, reshape it, push it to another — with a human approving the first runs.

Monitoring and alerts. Watch inboxes, dashboards, or queues and open tickets when thresholds trip.

Draft-and-route. Prepare a reply or a change request and send it to the right person, not straight to the customer.

What they still cannot own alone

Ambiguous goals. Conflicting policies. Anything where a wrong action costs money or trust. Agents follow procedures; they do not replace judgement when the procedure does not fit.

How to try them without chaos

Start with one boring workflow, log every tool call, set a kill switch, and keep a human on the publish button. “Autonomous” should mean fewer clicks — not fewer accountability.

Autonomy without guardrails is how you invent cybersecurity risks that arrive with AI agents.

Day-to-day, start narrower with which tasks you can already hand to AI.

Treat AI agents like junior operators with APIs: fast on clear tasks, dangerous when you pretend they understand the business.
