How to write in-app messages users actually understand

Users do not fail your feature in a lab — they fail your sentence on a phone between subway stops. UX writing is the interface between intent and action. If the words are vague, the UI might as well be broken.

How do you write in-app messages people actually understand?

Lead with the outcome

“Save changes” beats “Submit.” “Add payment method to finish checkout” beats “Continue.” Say what happens next in the user’s words.

One idea per screen moment

Errors that list five problems in corporate prose get ignored. Point to the field, name the fix, stop talking.

Drop false friendliness

Oopsie exclamation marks do not soften a failed payment. Clarity is kinder than cute.

Match the stakes

Deleting a draft can be casual. Deleting an account needs friction and plain consequences. Tone should track irreversible risk.

Test with real haste

Read copy aloud. Show it to someone outside the team for five seconds. If they cannot say what to do, rewrite.

Good UX writing disappears into successful action. Bad UX writing becomes a support ticket with a screenshot of your own button.
