Complex work still needs spatial layout, precise controls, and software you can learn deeply. Spreadsheets and IDEs are not going to become paragraph prompts overnight.

Delegate a goal, let tools run, get a result. Powerful for multi-step chores — fragile when goals are fuzzy or mistakes are expensive.
Conversation as the shell
Chat lowers the skill floor. It also hides state, makes undo awkward, and struggles with dense comparison. Talking is a great input mode, a weak exclusive UI.
The likely mix
Conversation to start and steer. Agents for bounded workflows. Classic apps for craft, control, and audit trails. The winning computer will feel less like picking a metaphor and more like fluidly switching modes.
The future is probably not “only chat.” It is a desk where speech, agents, and real applications share the same job — getting something done without making you care which layer moved.
