What an agent can already handle
Drafting product descriptions from specs. Tagging support tickets. Suggesting reorder points from sales history. Generating discount copy for a campaign you already approved. Routine FAQ replies with clear policies behind them.
What still breaks without a person
Pricing wars with competitors. Refunds that need judgement. Fraud that looks like a real customer. Brand voice in a public argument. Legal claims on the product page. An agent that “almost” ships the wrong promise is still a liability.
A realistic operating model
Agent as night-shift junior: propose, queue, escalate. Human owns money movement, policy changes, and anything irreversible. Log every tool call. Cap autonomous spend.
A shop can feel more automated than last year. “Almost independently” still means someone is accountable when the bot is confidently wrong at 3 a.m.
