NVIDIA's RTX 5090 hit store shelves around 30 January 2025, a few weeks after the CES unveil. The next day is a fair moment to ask what you are actually buying: a gaming flex, or a home AI machine with RGB.
Gaming still sells the box
Frames, path tracing, and bragging rights move units. That has not changed. What changed is the second column on the spec sheet: Tensor horsepower aimed at generative workloads, including lower precision paths like FP4 that matter for local models.
Local AI on the desk
A top consumer GPU increasingly doubles as a private inference box for image tools, small LLMs, and experiments you do not want to send to a cloud tab. That is the same energy as AI without the internet and the wider AI PC story.
So is the 5090 a graphics card? Yes. Is it also a domestic AI appliance for people who can feed it power and cash? Also yes. The category blur is the product.
Power draw and price still gate the dream. Not every living room becomes a lab. For those who can afford the wall wattage, though, the line between console killer and personal model host is now a settings menu, not a philosophy debate.
