Gorgeous and unavailable
That combination is classic big-tech stagecraft. Prove the stack. Admit cost and manufacturing are not ready for a consumer line.
Why show it anyway
To set the roadmap narrative, calm the "Meta has no hardware future" crowd, and warn competitors. Also to remind everyone that true AR glasses are still a production problem dressed as a software problem.
Orion is a north star you cannot put in a cart. Useful for researchers. Frustrating for enthusiasts. Honest, at least, about the gap between wow and warehouse.
Developers get a target. Critics get ammunition about Meta's spend. Consumers get a trailer without a buy button.
Sometimes that is the honest phase of a platform. Orion is Meta saying the glasses future is real and also saying you cannot have this pair. Frustrating. Clear.
For everyone else, Orion is a postcard from a future aisle that is still closed. That can be inspiring without being a purchase decision.
