Apple Intelligence landed at WWDC on 10 June 2024 with a familiar Apple move: late to the chatbot party, early to talk about personal context, on-device models, and Private Cloud Compute.
Integration over novelty
The bet is not "here is a chat island." It is writing tools, notifications, and system features that know your stuff without shipping your life to a random server farm.
Late or careful?
Rivals shipped louder and earlier. Apple is shipping inside the OS people already trust with photos and messages. If privacy theater becomes privacy practice, delay looks like strategy.
If features trickle out slowly or feel timid, delay looks like fear. June is the pitch, not the proof. The interesting comparison is not chatbot leaderboards. It is whether Apple can make AI feel like system furniture.
Apple also has to ship on older silicon realities and App Store politics. Promises at WWDC are calendars, not downloads.
Still, the strategic outline is clear: make AI feel like Continuity and Focus modes, not like a pasted chatbot. That is a different race than raw model size.
