Rabbit showed the R1 at CES in early January 2024: a bright little box, $199, no monthly fee, and a big claim. Instead of opening apps, you tell a Large Action Model what you want done.
This is peak post-app fantasy. Book rides, order food, poke at services through one voice and one screen, while the model clicks around for you.
Why the idea stuck
Phone home screens are crowded. People are tired of learning another UI. A gadget that "just does the thing" sounds like relief, especially if it skips a subscription.
It also sounds like science fiction that breaks on logins, captchas, and redesigns. Still, the first week of hype is not about edge cases. It is about the slogan.
What to watch
Can LAM reliably act across real services? Is a dedicated device better than a phone app doing the same job? CES demos love clean tables. Daily life is messier.
For now, R1 is a $199 statement about a smartphone era that feels stuck and a bet that AI actions beat app icons. Reviews will be harsher later. The pitch is soft and loud today.
